This Saturday, 17 June LGT took part in the Hackney Unites festival held in Hackney Community College. The vibrant event brought together over 50 community groups, ranging from a wide variety of ethnic and community groups, health related charities, education institutions, child migrant stories, a refugee choir. There was also a fashion show, circus performances, free ice cream and face painting for children. The event highlighted the diversity and inclusion of Hackney and how we have more in common than divides us.
London Gypsies and Travellers was there as well with members of the community engaging with visitors and showcasing our latest campaign #WeAreAllSoManyThings challenging prejudice and discrimination still faced by Gypsies and Travellers. We invited visitors to share their hope for the future of the Gypsy and Traveller community on our now famous pink slips.
During the day a number of campaign films produced by LGT were shown. They included short films on the Olympics relocation and housing campaigns, highlighting the ongoing struggle within the Gypsy and Traveller community for culturally appropriate housing, acceptance and respect for their distinct way of life and more sites and pitches. An historical exhibition of Gypsies and Travellers in London showed the community living side by side Londoners for over 100 years.
