With the local elections coming up on 3rd May, London Gypsies and Travellers is asking local councillors and local mayors to take a lead in promoting greater inclusion for Gypsy and Traveller communities and stand up against prejudice and discrimination.
LGT is asking candidates to support to its community-led #Weareallsomanythings campaign. They can do so by signing up to the following pledge:
“It’s time to address the last acceptable form of racism in our society – the everyday prejudice facing Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities. As an elected representative I will support the #Weareallsomanythings campaign to challenge discrimination and increase community cohesion.”
Those who have already signed up include: Councillor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, candidate for Mayor of Newham; Councillor Chris Kennedy, candidate for Hackney Wick Ward, Hackney; Samir Jeraj, candidate for Hoxton East and Shoreditch; and Alex Armitage, candidate for Dalston.
In an additional statement, Councillor Kennedy said: “In my own ward, Hackney Wick, I will continue to work towards the building of a new Gypsy and Traveller site on Bartrip Street.”
Samir Jeraj said: “Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities make a huge contribution to Hackney and to London. I’ve been privileged to work with Traveller groups on issues such as housing, health, and employment. If elected as a councillor, I will work to end the discrimination and support Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.”
Alex Armitage said: “I recognise that there is everyday prejudice against Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and I reject it. With the Green Party, I will continue to campaign to change society so that it is inclusive and accessible to all.”
